NDT – also referred to as desiccated thyroid extract (DTE) or "porcine thyroid" – is a thyroid hormone replacement medication in continuous use since the early 1900s. It was the first treatment for hypothyroidism and the only available treatment for the first half of the twentieth century.
Desiccated thyroid extract powder is a natural source combination L-T4 (Levothyroxine ) and L-T3 ( Liothyronine) hormones. Thyroid powder is easily absorbed by human body and have less side effects compared to synthetic drugs.
Different Sources: NDT is animal-derived, while synthetic thyroid hormone is created in a lab.
Different Concentration: NDT contains higher levels of T3 and T4,approximating the ratio found in human thyroid glands.Levothyroxine is synthetic tetraiodothyronine (T4) only.
Patient Preference and Efficacy:A significant percentage of patients (nearly 50% in one study) prefer NDT, reporting improvements in weight loss, memory, and energy. However, some studies show no significant symptomatic difference between the two treatments.
